Calming, minimalist bath by Joshua Rice Design

“My favorite spaces to design are living rooms and primary bathrooms,” says Joshua Rice Design’s Joshua Rice. “I think this bathroom is one of the most successful renovations that we have done. The original space was a disjointed mess with bad details and overly dark materials that made it feel like a cave. Our renovation added an additional window and lightened the color of the materials all around to create a beautiful, calming space.”

Rice centered the design around Bianco Perlino marble. “This is a very dense limestone that’s common in the Venetian regions of Italy,” he says. “It is a fairly pedestrian type of stone that is used for streets and curbs throughout the region. I have always thought it would be a beautiful stone presented in a luxury environment. It is dense and durable, making it perfect for a bathroom.”

He also paid great attention to the details. “Everything in this room is perfectly aligned,” he says. “The tile grout lines intersect perfectly both horizontally and vertically around the room.” To get an equally meticulous result, Rice encourages homeowners to hire a trusted contractor. He worked closely with BufordHawthorne to finish out this bathroom with stone trim, the steam shower, the solid stone stinks and tile patterns.
