OUR STORY
Joshua Rice Design is a Dallas-based luxury interior design studio founded in 2007, specializing in architecturally minded interiors, collectible design, and the development of custom furniture, lighting, and objects. Our practice works across interior architecture, new construction, and major renovations, approaching each project through a disciplined process rooted in craftsmanship, material knowledge, and a clear understanding of how people live.
Founded by Joshua Rice, the practice is known for a refined aesthetic and a tailored approach to each project. From immersive, primarily residential environments to bespoke furniture pieces, the studio blends modern restraint with material richness, producing work that feels both contemporary and enduring.
Each project reflects an ongoing dialogue between architecture, interiors, objects, and light. Through careful editing, custom development, and close collaboration, the studio creates environments that are visually calm, highly specific, and intended to evolve over time.
OUR PERSPECTIVE
Our approach begins with structure. An empty room presents an opportunity to establish proportion, material continuity, and a clear spatial framework before anything is brought in. From there, the work becomes more deliberate. We spend a great deal of time developing furniture layouts that feel both highly resolved and slightly unexpected, avoiding default arrangements in favor of compositions that better suit the architecture, circulation, and character of the space. Rather than relying on predictable pieces, we often look to rare vintage works, emerging makers, or original furniture developed specifically for the project so the interior feels distinct and quietly personal.
The philosophy behind this is simple. We favor subtraction over accumulation. Decisions are guided by material, light, and proportion, not decoration. The goal is to create spaces that feel calm, resolved, and lasting, while still warm and livable. Natural materials, careful editing, and precise detailing are what hold everything together.
OUR STUDIO STRUCTURE
We maintain a deliberately small studio, so each project receives direct involvement from our entire team across all phases, including concept, documentation, fabrication, and installation. This continuity allows decisions to develop with clarity and supports a strong sense of authorship that is characteristic in all of our projects.
Design decisions move fluidly across disciplines. Interior design, interior architectural planning, furniture layouts & selections, sourcing, and advisory are integrated into a unified process, allowing ideas to be refined through iteration giving each project a sense of cohesion.
This structure enables the studio to engage deeply with only a select number of projects, ensuring that complex work receives sustained attention and that each environment evolves with clarity and care.
OUR PROCESS
Engagement ideally begins early, during conceptual architectural planning or at pivotal points of reinvention within an existing structure. Early participation allows our studio to influence interior architecture, establish material direction, and identify where custom development will meaningfully shape the outcome.
Projects are led through close coordination and sustained involvement. The studio works within collaborative teams that may include architects, lighting designers, contractors, consultants, and specialized fabricators, helping maintain clarity and design intent as decisions move from concept to documentation, construction, and installation.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Collaboration is foundational to how our studio works. Interiors are developed to support architectural intent, creating continuity rather than contrast between disciplines.
Our studio often serves as a point of continuity across project teams, aligning custom elements, material decisions, and technical requirements with the larger direction of the work. The goal is not simply coordination, but a more resolved final result.
Relationships with artisans, workshops, galleries, and fabricators allow our studio to develop solutions that go beyond standard offerings. This makes it possible to create interiors that feel more precise, more cohesive, and more specific to the people who experience them.
