Furniture, Lighting & Objects

The design practice at Joshua Rice Design grows directly out of our interior work. When existing pieces cannot adequately resolve questions of scale, proportion, material, or function within a space, our studio develops original designs.

Furniture, lighting, and functional objects are approached as integral parts of the interior. Each piece is developed to support circulation, spatial clarity, material continuity, and the overall experience of a room.

This work begins with context. Forms are developed through drawing, 3D study models, and close collaboration with our fabrication partners, allowing material and method of construction to shape the final result.

When the right piece does not exist, we make it.

Over time, this work has grown into a body of original pieces shaped by our studio’s ongoing interest in proportion, material clarity, and sculptural form.

FURNITURE

Many residential projects require furniture developed specifically for the interior. When questions of proportion, material, or function cannot be properly resolved through existing pieces, our studio designs original solutions.

These may include tables, seating, consoles, built-in casework, and other custom elements developed in direct response to the interior design. Concepts are refined through drawings and prototypes, with fabrication partners selected for precision, material expertise, and long-term durability.

Our studio’s furniture design work also extends into the Rische Collection, a sister company offering commercially available pieces developed from this practice. Designs shown on our website but not included in the Rische Collection portfolio may also be commissioned upon request.

LIGHTING

Lighting is approached with the same discipline applied to furniture and interior design. When standard fixtures cannot adequately resolve a spatial condition or support the design intent of a project, our studio develops original lighting solutions.

These may include pendants, sconces, integrated millwork lighting, or custom fixtures designed specifically for a space. Considerations often include scale, light quality, diffusion, and the relationship between each fixture and its surrounding materials.

Prototypes are reviewed carefully, and fabrication partners are selected for their ability to translate precise material decisions into durable, functional pieces. Each fixture is developed to shape atmosphere while remaining fully aligned with the larger interior.

OBJECTS

Functional objects extend our studio’s design thinking into smaller-scale elements. When a project calls for a detail that cannot be sourced, our studio develops it.

These pieces may include hardware, rugs, vessels, sculptural components, or specialized fittings created to resolve specific functional needs or reinforce broader interior decisions. Many emerge through material exploration or fabrication processes uncovered during larger projects.

Each object is developed with careful attention to proportion, finish, and tactile quality so that it remains consistent with the material language of the surrounding interior.
