Apartment of a Young Aesthete

Written by Barbara Ruppel

(Translated) The over 200-square-meter apartment is located in a modernist townhouse designed by renowned Texas architect Bud Oglesby. His designs are characterized by restraint and harmony—and Joshua Rice chose to incorporate these qualities into his interior design.

Because the apartment's original layout was functional and designed with ease of use in mind, Joshua Rice was able to focus on the interior design itself without a time-consuming renovation. The color palette is dominated by warm, neutral shades like white and beige, with slightly bolder accents like ochre and terracotta. The exception is the guest room, where the main wall featuring a bookcase was painted blue.

Carefully selected materials also contribute to the apartment's cozy atmosphere. The designer managed to preserve the oak parquet floors and the original Saltillo terracotta tiles in the living room. The apartment also features elegant Brazilian quartzite, textured textiles, and patina-coated elements that will age well, emphasizing the timeless character of the design. The decorative plasterwork also looks impressive, adding a touch of rustic beauty to the interiors.

The owner grew up in a home of art and design collectors, so her own home couldn't be complete without unique furniture and furnishings. Notable examples include teak and leather dining chairs by Finn Juhl, a wenge wood armchair upholstered in bouclé fabric by Theo Ruth, a leather sofa by Frits Henningsen, the 115 chair by Donald Judd, and a vintage coffee table designed by Enzo Mari.
