A Texas Ranch Revitalized

Joshua Rice Design, established in 2007, is a multidisciplinary design studio specializing in interior design, renovations, new construction, and custom furniture, lighting, and objects. Their work transcends fleeting trends, emphasizing clean, refined, and logical spaces that remain warm and personal. With a meticulous eye for detail and a deep appreciation for natural materials, their approach prioritizes subtraction over decoration, resulting in luxurious yet inviting modern designs.

This expansive Texas ranch, built in the late 1970s, underwent a transformative five-year renovation. The redesign opened the home’s previously fragmented layout into a spacious, light-filled environment with a striking 50-meter window-lined view from end to end. Unified by materials like Pietra Grey stone, Venetian plaster, teak cabinetry, and white oak floors, the home maintains distinct zones for living, dining, kitchen, and entertainment areas. Outside, the creekside yard flows seamlessly into a pool and patio, blending nature with architecture. The renovation was a collaboration between interior designer Joshua Rice, who led the interiors, and architect Marc McCollum, who led the architectural updates.

The primary suite’s sitting area, bathed in morning light, features a low table by Brazilian designer Jader Almeida, complemented by vintage pieces from Edward Wormley and Nanna Ditzel, and a rug by Atelier Agahzadeh. The breakfast room overlooks the pool, showcasing translucent fiberglass furniture by Faye Toogood that glows in sunlight.

The sunken living room highlights vintage Brazilian furniture by Jorge Zalszupin, a Christophe Delcourt sofa, and an antique Oushak rug. Nearby, the piano room features a wall sculpture by Mexican artist Aldo Chaparro, vintage Sergio Rodrigues chairs, and a Pietra marble and Venetian plaster fireplace with a rare sculpture by Joaquim Tenreiro. Bronze and ceramic tables by Jojo Corväia and a sofa by Rikke Frost complete the look.

In the dining room, an oversized vintage rosewood and leather table by Jorge Zalszupin pairs with Edward Wormley chairs from the 1950s. A ‘Palindrome’ pendant from RBW illuminates an oil painting by Fiona Weedon. The Venetian plaster fireplace wall, clad in Pietra Grey stone, separates the sunken living room from the entrance. Bronze sculptural andirons of unknown vintage add a striking touch.

In the office, a light fixture by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Flos hangs above a Preben Fabricius and Jorgen Kastholm swivel chair and a vintage bronze and leather lounge chair by Katavolos, Littell, and Kelley. The Poltrona Frau desk sits on an Atelier Agahzadeh rug, paired with a linen pouf by Pauline Esparon.
