Vanguard is a modern Dallas residence shaped by exceptional architecture, a commanding treehouse-like setting, and a serious collection of contemporary art. Set within one of the city’s most significant modern houses by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, the project required an interior approach disciplined enough to support the architecture, the views, and the artwork without competing with any of them.
Joshua Rice Design developed the furnishings as a quiet counterpoint to the house itself. Expansive glazing, concrete, warm woods, and long sightlines already gave the residence its structure and presence, so the interiors were selected to reinforce that clarity while making the rooms feel settled, comfortable, and usable for daily life and entertaining. The goal was not to fill the house, but to place each piece in a way that heightened the experience of moving through it and looking out into the canopy beyond.
Furniture was chosen for proportion, visual restraint, and material depth, with forms that complement the architecture’s strength without adding noise. The relationship between interior pieces, major art works, and the surrounding views was considered room by room so that no element felt isolated or overstated. Art consultation by Michael Thomas played a central role in that balance. The result is a residence in which architecture, landscape, furnishings, and art are held in deliberate alignment
