In This Special Dallas Apartment Designed in the 1980s by Bud Oglesby, Everything is About Quiet Restraint.

(Translated) The home was given new life under the hand of designer Joshua Rice, who not only refined the aesthetic of the space but also wove personal history into the process. The apartment belongs to a young woman who grew up in an artistic environment and now devotes herself to raising her child. In this carefully composed home, these two worlds meet with ease and elegance.

A space that inspires

The apartment is located in one of Dallas’s quieter yet vibrant neighborhoods, and the surroundings themselves help define the style. Precise proportions, natural light, restrained material use, and a sensitive relationship to the architecture all recall the values of modernism. Rice’s goal was not a radical transformation, but rather the preservation of the original character and a thoughtful reinterpretation of it.

Inspiration rooted in personal memory

The project was not only a professional challenge for the designer but also carried emotional weight. Years ago, Rice worked as an intern in the home of the client’s parents. Today, that former child is the client herself. This history provided an emotional foundation for the project, allowing the space to become a setting for care, respect, and personal growth.

Materials that tell a story

At 220 square meters, the apartment was already well proportioned and functional, so Rice focused on subtle refinements. The original terracotta flooring was preserved and restored, while the walls and ceilings were refined into smooth, high-quality surfaces. The color palette is restrained: greige, ochre, rusty tones, and natural wood create a sense of calm and warmth. In the guest room, a deep, richly colored blue bookshelf adds a quiet but distinctive character to the space.

Iconic furniture throughout

The interior features works by internationally renowned designers such as Isamu Noguchi, Donald Judd, Finn Juhl, and Afra & Tobia Scarpa. These pieces do not demand attention but instead integrate naturally into the space, as if they had always belonged there. In the living area, a custom long, floating aluminum cabinet balances antique British chairs, while in the kitchen, a Brazilian quartzite countertop and custom plaster emphasize the role of materials and varied textures.

Layers of calm

The owner spends part of her time in New York, but this Dallas apartment remains a steady anchor. Perhaps its greatest strength is that it does not reveal itself all at once. The space unfolds slowly, with every detail carefully considered and restrained. This is not a home that seeks to impress. Instead, it offers a sense of quiet, restorative calm.
