A modern Highland Park residence designed for a young family looking for something more considered than the expected bright-white version of contemporary living. Set on a difficult corner site and developed in collaboration with Smith Architects, the architecture establishes a grounded framework of grey limestone, raked wood, stucco, and expansive Portuguese glass.

Joshua Rice Design developed the interior architecture and finish out in direct response to that structure, introducing a darker, more tactile material language that brings weight and depth to the spaces. Curved wood volumes, fluted surfaces, and monolithic stone elements create moments of compression and release, allowing the house to feel both controlled and quietly expressive.

Natural light is treated as a material. Large expanses of glass soften the interiors throughout the day, while the darker palette holds the rooms in place, preventing the architecture from feeling overly open or washed out. The balance between solidity and transparency gives the home a sense of calm without relying on minimalism alone.

The interiors are layered with rare and carefully curated furniture and design objects, alongside custom-developed elements including carved stone bath pieces produced in Italy. Each decision reinforces a focus on material integrity, proportion, and long-term presence.
